What is Kiwanis?

Kiwanis is a worldwide service organization of individuals who want to improve their communities. As a group, they can achieve what they cannot do alone.

Kiwanis International has over 300,000 members. Alabama has some 117 clubs with about 6,300 members. The Birmingham metropolitan area has 18 clubs divided into two divisions, Division 5 with 8 clubs and Division 6 with 10 clubs.

What does Kiwanis do?

Kiwanis clubs perform hands-on projects focusing on the special needs of the community. The Vestavia-Hoover club reads to Head Start classes periodically and also provides personal books for Head Start students (R.I.F.), helped raise funds for the Children's Hospital, provided scholarships for 3 high schools, contributed to the Boy Scout square in Vestavia, participates in and supports the Pig Iron Barbecue and other worthwhile community causes.

Kiwanis' emphasis is "Young Children - Priority One"

Club Activities

The Vestavia - Hoover Kiwanis Club sponsors Key Clubs at Vestavia High School, Hoover High School and Indian Springs School.

Membership

Membership is by invitation only. A proposed member is asked to complete a membership application. Upon approval of the new member by the Board, induction takes place at the next regular meeting of the club at which the new member is in attendance. It is expected that at that time payment will be made of the one time new member fee of $60.00 to cover administrative costs of the club, their first quarter’s dues of $90.00 which covers meals and subscription to Kiwanis Magazine.

Attendance Requirements

When a club meeting is missed, the cost of the prepaid meal is forfeited as members are encouraged to attend meetings regularly. A missed meeting may be made up, within a month, by attending a regular meeting of another Kiwanis club or one of this club's regular board meetings which are usually held on the first Monday night of the month.
